History of Jenison
The land where Jenison is now located was first home to the Peoria and Odawa indigenous peoples. In 1836, the first white settlers arrived. They came to the area to use the Grand River for lumber.
The community got its name from the Jenison family. They opened a sawmill in 1864, which was very important for the area. A post office was set up in 1872 and was first called Jenisonville. The name was later shortened to Jenison in 1887.
