Early Life and Education
Jenni Gibbons was born in Calgary, Canada, on August 3, 1988. She loved learning about how things work.
University Studies
She studied mechanical engineering at McGill University. While there, she worked with the Canadian Space Agency. She researched how flames spread in space, where there is very little gravity. This is important for safety on spacecraft.
Later, she earned her PhD in engineering from Cambridge University in 2015. Her studies focused on how things burn, which is called combustion.
Before Becoming an Astronaut
Before joining the CSA, Jenni Gibbons taught at the University of Cambridge. She taught students about energy, how engines work, and the physics of flames.
Awards for Engineering
In 2016, Jenni received two special awards. She was named the Institution of Engineering and Technology's Young Woman Engineer of the Year. She also received a Young Engineer of the Year Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering. These awards recognized her amazing work in engineering.
Her Journey to Space
The Canadian Space Agency chose Jenni Gibbons to be an astronaut in 2017. She was part of their fourth group of new astronauts. She joined another astronaut, Joshua Kutryk, in this group.
Youngest Canadian Astronaut
Jenni was the third woman chosen as an astronaut by the CSA. The first two were Roberta Bondar and Julie Payette. At 28 years old, Jenni became the youngest astronaut candidate ever picked by the agency.
Astronaut Training
In July 2017, Jenni moved to Houston, USA. She started a two-year training program at the Johnson Space Center. She trained alongside the new astronauts from NASA. This training prepares astronauts for missions in space.
Artemis II Mission
On November 22, 2023, the CSA announced something very exciting. Jenni Gibbons was chosen as the backup astronaut for Jeremy Hansen on the Artemis II mission. This mission is part of NASA's plan to send humans back to the Moon. Artemis II will fly around the Moon. It is planned to launch no earlier than April 2026.
