Jennifer Roma Seberry (also known as Jennifer Seberry Wallis) was born in Sydney, Australia, on February 13, 1944. She is a very smart Australian scientist who works with secret codes (this is called cryptography), mathematics, and computers. Becoming a Computer Scientist

Jennifer Seberry went to Parramatta High School. She studied at several universities, including the University of New South Wales and La Trobe University. She earned her PhD in Computational Mathematics from La Trobe University in 1971. A PhD is the highest university degree you can get. Her teacher for her PhD was Bertram Mond.

Jennifer Seberry was a pioneer in her field. She was the first person to teach cryptology (the study of secret codes) at an Australian university. She was also the first woman to become a Professor of Computer Science in Australia. This shows how important her work was and how she helped open doors for other women in science.

By 2020, she had helped 30 students get their PhDs. Many of her students became important scientists themselves, like Peter Eades, Mirka Miller, and Deborah Street.

Helping the Community

Jennifer Seberry has also helped build important groups in the world of computer security. In 1987, she helped start a group at the University of Sydney. This group later grew into the Australian Information Security Association. This is a big organization that helps people and businesses keep their information safe online. It has over 1,000 members across Australia.

She also helped start a major international conference called Asiacrypt in 1990. This conference brings together experts from all over the world to share new ideas about cryptography and computer security.

Amazing Research and Discoveries

Jennifer Seberry has done a lot of important research. She has studied special mathematical tools called Hadamard matrices and bent functions. These tools help make computer networks more secure. She has written many scientific papers about mathematics, cryptography, and keeping computers safe.

She led the team that created some important computer codes. These include the LOKI and LOKI97 block ciphers. Block ciphers are like complex puzzles that scramble and unscramble data in blocks to keep it secret. Her team also created the HAVAL cryptographic hash functions. Hash functions are like digital fingerprints for data; they help check if data has been changed.

Jennifer Seberry also helped create the Py stream cipher. A stream cipher is another type of code that encrypts data one bit at a time. This cipher was even considered for a big international project to find the best new stream ciphers.
