Jenny Antoinette Baglivo, born in 1948, is an American mathematician and statistician. She is also an author of several books. She used to be a professor of mathematics at Boston College. Today, she continues her work there as a research professor.

Becoming a Scientist

Jenny Baglivo grew up in Brooklyn, a busy part of New York City. Her father fixed watches, and her grandparents had moved to the U.S. from Italy. Jenny was the only one of her four brothers and sisters to go to college.

Her College Journey

She studied mathematics at Fordham University and graduated in 1970. After that, she went to Syracuse University for more advanced studies. There, she earned two master's degrees. One was in mathematics in 1972, and the other was in computer and information science in 1976.

In 1976, she also earned her PhD in mathematics from Syracuse. Her special area of study was called algebraic topology. This is a branch of mathematics that uses tools from abstract algebra to study shapes and spaces. Her PhD paper was about something called "Wall's finiteness obstruction." Her professor, Douglas R. Anderson, helped her with this important work.

Working as a Professor and Researcher

After finishing her PhD, Dr. Baglivo became a mathematics professor at Fairfield University. She was promoted to associate professor in 1981. While still teaching at Fairfield, she also worked as a special researcher at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center from 1980 to 1982.

At the Cancer Center, she worked as a biostatistician. This means she used math and statistics to study biological and health information. She helped analyze CT scans of brains, which are special X-ray pictures that show detailed images inside the body. In 1986, she moved to Boston College, where she became a full professor in 1992.

Books She Wrote

Dr. Baglivo has written some important books. One of her books is called Incidence and Symmetry in Design and Architecture. She wrote this book with Jack E. Graver, and it was published in 1983. This book won an award called the Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award in the same year.

The Mathematical Association of America also suggested this book for college math libraries. This shows how helpful and well-regarded her work is in the field of mathematics.

She also wrote another book titled Mathematica Laboratories for Mathematical Statistics: Emphasizing Simulation and Computer Intensive Methods. This book was published in 2005.
