Jeremiah Moulton (born in York, Massachusetts, which is now York, Maine, in 1688; died in York on July 20, 1765) was an important New England military officer and a member of the Massachusetts Council. When he was a young boy, during a conflict called King William's War, his parents died, and he was taken captive in the Raid on York (1692).

Who Was Jeremiah Moulton?

Jeremiah Moulton grew up to be a respected leader in colonial New England. He was known for his bravery in military service and his work in government. His life story shows how people lived and contributed during the early days of America.

Early Life and Challenges

Jeremiah's childhood was very difficult. When he was just four years old, his hometown of York was attacked during King William's War. This event, known as the Raid on York, led to the death of his parents. Young Jeremiah was captured during the raid. He later managed to return home, but these early experiences likely shaped his strong character and determination.

Military Service and Leadership

Moulton became a skilled military officer in the New England militia. A militia was a group of citizens who trained to protect their towns and colonies. He played a key role in several important conflicts:

  • Father Rale's War: He served as a captain during this war, which took place in the 1720s.
  • King George's War: During this war, Moulton was a colonel. He helped lead colonial troops in major battles.

The Siege of Louisbourg (1745)

One of Jeremiah Moulton's most famous military achievements was his involvement in the Siege of Louisbourg (1745). Louisbourg was a strong French fortress in what is now Nova Scotia, Canada. In 1745, colonial forces, with help from the British navy, launched a surprise attack. Colonel Moulton commanded one of the regiments (a large group of soldiers) during this important siege. The capture of Louisbourg was a huge victory for the British and colonial forces. After this success, Moulton was given a special silver tankard (a large drinking cup) by William Pepperrell, another leader from the siege.

Public Service and Government Roles

Besides his military career, Jeremiah Moulton also held many important positions in government:

  • Sheriff of York County: He was responsible for law enforcement in his home county.
  • Judge of Probate: This role involved handling legal matters related to wills and estates.
  • Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas: He served as a top judge in the local court system.
  • Massachusetts Council Member: This was a very important role. The Massachusetts Council was like the upper house of the colonial government's legislature. It helped make laws and advise the governor. Moulton served on the Council for many years, showing his dedication to public service.

Legacy and Burial

Jeremiah Moulton passed away in 1765 in York, Maine. He is buried in the Old York Cemetery in York Village. His life shows the spirit of early American leaders who were willing to serve their communities in both military and civilian roles during a time of great change and conflict.
