Jeremiah Norman Williams (born May 29, 1829 – died May 8, 1915) was an American politician. He served two terms as a U.S. Representative for Alabama. He was a member of the Democratic Party. His election helped the Democratic Party regain control in Alabama's 2nd congressional district after the Reconstruction period.

Early Life and Education

Jeremiah Norman Williams was born on May 29, 1829, near Louisville, Alabama. His parents were Judge Stith and Euphemia Williams.

He went to schools in Barbour County. Later, he graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1852.

After college, he studied law in Montgomery and Tuskegee, Alabama. In 1855, he passed his exams and became a lawyer. He then started his law practice in Clayton, Alabama.

Military Service in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, Jeremiah Williams joined the Confederate States Army. He became a captain of a group called the Clayton Guards. Later, he was promoted to major in the First Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He left the army because he became ill.

During the war, he married Mary Eliza Screws. They had five children together.

Political Career and Public Service

After the Civil War, Williams continued his public service. In 1872, he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives. However, he was not able to take his seat at that time.

In 1874, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented Alabama's 2nd congressional district in the 44th United States Congress.

After some changes to the voting districts, he won a second term. This time, he represented Alabama's 3rd congressional district in the 45th United States Congress. During this term, he led the Committee on Expenditures in the Post Office Department. He served in Congress from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1879.

After leaving Congress, he went back to his law practice in Clayton. He also served as a judge in the chancery court from 1893 to 1899. In 1901, he was a member of the State constitutional convention, which helped write Alabama's state constitution.

Jeremiah Norman Williams passed away in Clayton on May 8, 1915. He was buried in the City Cemetery there.
