Jericho Brown was born Nelson Demery III in Shreveport, Louisiana. He later changed his name. He went to Dillard University and then earned advanced degrees from the University of New Orleans and the University of Houston.

Brown has worked as a teacher at several universities. He taught English at the University of Houston and the University of San Diego. He also leads the Creative Writing Program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 2011, Brown received a special award called the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for Poetry. His poems have been published in many respected journals. These include The Iowa Review, The New Republic, and The Best American Poetry.
