Jericho Brown (born April 14, 1976) is a famous American poet and writer. He was born and grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. Brown has taught at many universities, including the University of Houston and Emory University. His poems have appeared in well-known magazines like The New Yorker.
He has written several books of poetry. His first book, Please, came out in 2008. His second book, The New Testament, was released in 2014. In 2019, his poetry collection The Tradition received a lot of praise. Jericho Brown has won many important awards for his writing. These include a Whiting Award, an American Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
About His Life
Jericho Brown was born Nelson Demery III. He grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. Later, he changed his name. He went to Dillard University and joined the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity in 1995. He also earned advanced degrees from the University of New Orleans and the University of Houston.
Brown has taught English and creative writing at several universities. He was a visiting professor at San Diego State University. He also taught at the University of San Diego. Today, he is a professor of English and leads the Creative Writing Program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He has also led many writing workshops and festivals.
In 2011, Brown received a special award called the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for Poetry. His poems have been published in many important literary journals. These include The Iowa Review, The Nation, and The New Yorker. He also works as an Assistant Editor for Callaloo, which is a journal about African-American arts and culture.
His first book, Please (published in 2008), won the American Book Award. His second book of poems, The New Testament (published in 2014), won the 2015 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award.
Brown's third book, The Tradition (published in 2019), was highly praised by critics. This book also won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
In 2023, Brown published his fourth book. It is called How We Do it: Black Writers on Craft, Practice and Skill. This book is a collection of 31 essays and interviews from African American authors.
