Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jerome Bellamy lived in England a long time ago, in the 1500s. He came from a family called the Bellamy family. They were known for being Roman Catholics at a time when that was difficult in England. His family often welcomed people who shared their faith into their home, Uxenden Hall, near London.

Jerome Bellamy: A Story from History

Jerome Bellamy was a younger son of William and Katherine Bellamy. He was a kind person who supported Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary was a queen who was held prisoner in England. Many people wanted to help her.

A Family's Beliefs

The Bellamy family was known as "recusants." This meant they were Roman Catholics who did not attend the official Church of England services. They were known for being very welcoming to missionaries and other Catholics who were facing difficulties.

The Babington Plot Uncovered

In the late 1500s, a secret plan was made. It was called the Babington plot. The main goal of this plot was to free Mary, Queen of Scots. It also involved a plan to harm her cousin, Queen Elizabeth.

Helping Those in Hiding

The plot was discovered by the authorities. The leader of the plot, Anthony Babington, and two friends, Barnewell and Donne, needed a safe place to hide. They went to Bellamy's home, Uxenden Hall.

At first, they hid in a hay barn on the property. Jerome Bellamy made sure they had food. Later, he let them come inside his house. Because he helped them, Jerome Bellamy was arrested. He was accused of being involved in the plot.

The Consequences

Jerome Bellamy and the others involved in the Babington plot were accused of serious crimes. They had a trial and were found guilty on September 15, 1586. Fourteen people in total were found guilty.

Bellamy was taken to a place called Tyburn on September 21. The day before, some of the others had faced a very harsh punishment. Queen Elizabeth heard about how terrible it was. She decided to change the punishment for Bellamy and those with him. They were allowed to hang until they were dead.
