Jerry Gibson's Baseball Journey
Jerry Gibson was born in Buena Vista, Georgia. He grew up loving baseball. He became a pitcher, which is a player who throws the ball to the batter.
Playing in the Negro Leagues
Jerry Gibson played in the Negro leagues. These leagues were professional baseball leagues for African American players. They existed when Black players were not allowed to play in Major League Baseball. Many amazing players, like Jerry and his famous brother Josh, played in these leagues.
Jerry started his career in 1934 with the Homestead Grays. This team was one of the most famous and successful teams in the Negro leagues. Later, in 1936, he played for the Cincinnati Tigers.
A Special Game
One of Jerry Gibson's most memorable moments happened on July 17, 1938. On that day, he pitched a no-hitter. A no-hitter is a very rare and exciting event in baseball. It means a pitcher plays an entire game without letting the other team get any hits. This shows how skilled Jerry was as a pitcher.
