Gerald Sheindlin (born November 19, 1933) is an American author, television personality, and former judge. He is well-known for his work as a trial judge in the New York Supreme Court. He also appeared on the TV show The People's Court.

Early Life and Education

Gerald Sheindlin was born in New York City, USA, on November 19, 1933. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he went to college. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Long Island University. Later, he received his Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1959.

Career as a Judge and Author

Sheindlin had a long and successful career as a judge. He served as a trial judge for the New York Supreme Court. This is a high-level court in New York State where important legal cases are decided.

Besides his work in law, Gerald Sheindlin is also an author. He has written two books. These books are titled Genetic Fingerprinting: The Law and Science of DNA Evidence and Blood Trail. They explore how science and law connect, especially in solving crimes.

Television Appearances

After his time as a trial judge, Sheindlin became a television judge. In the fall of 1999, he joined the TV show The People's Court. On this show, he helped people solve their disagreements in a courtroom setting. He took over from former New York City Mayor Ed Koch.

His wife, Judy Sheindlin, also had a very popular court show called Judge Judy. This meant they were both on TV at the same time, helping people with legal issues. Jerry Sheindlin was on The People's Court for the 1999–2000 season and part of the 2000–2001 season. After that, Marilyn Milian became the judge on the show.

Family Life

Gerald Sheindlin is married to Judy Sheindlin, who is famous as Judge Judy. They first married in 1978. This was a second marriage for both of them. They divorced in 1990 but then remarried in 1991.

Jerry Sheindlin has three children from his first marriage to Suzanne Rosenthal. Their names are Gregory, Jonathan, and Nicole. He also has two stepchildren from Judy's first marriage: Jamie Hartwright and Adam Levy. He is a grandfather to 13 grandchildren and has one great-grandchild. Some of his children have followed in his footsteps into the legal field. Adam, Greg, and Nicole are all lawyers. Jonathan A. Sheindlin is a retinal surgeon.
