Jerwood Space facts for kids
Jerwood Space is a special place for arts in London. It's located in an area called Bankside in Southwark. This building is a hub where artists can work and people can enjoy amazing art.
At Jerwood Space, you'll find many different things. There are studios where artists can practice their skills. There's also a gallery where you can see cool contemporary art and photography. You can even grab a snack at the café!
How Jerwood Space Started
The idea for Jerwood Space began a while ago. A special ceremony took place to mark the start of the building. Chris Smith, who was a government minister for culture at the time, helped lay the first stone. This happened before he became known as Lord Smith of Finsbury.
Since 2014, a person named Pete Wilkinson has been the Director of Jerwood Space. He helps make sure everything runs smoothly.
What Jerwood Arts Does
Jerwood Space is closely connected to an organization called Jerwood Arts. This group is like a helpful friend to artists in the UK. They give money and support to artists, people who choose art for shows (curators), and those who help put on events (producers).
Jerwood Arts plans exciting exhibitions and events all year long at Jerwood Space. Sometimes, these shows even travel to other parts of the country! When you visit an exhibition, you might also get to attend talks. These talks often feature writers, artists, and experts who share their ideas.
Jerwood Arts also invites three writers to stay at Jerwood Space each year. These "Writers in Residence" get a quiet place to work on their stories or poems. Some important events and awards from Jerwood Arts include the Jerwood Makers Open, Awards, and Jerwood Solo Presentations. These events help new and talented artists show their work.
