Jesús Kumate Rodríguez (born November 13, 1924, died May 7, 2018) was a very important doctor and politician from Mexico. He worked as the Secretary of Health for Mexico. This means he was in charge of all health-related things for the country. He held this job when Carlos Salinas de Gortari was president.

Early Life and Education
Jesús Kumate Rodríguez was born in a city called Mazatlán in 1924. His father came from Japan, and his mother was a teacher from Sinaloa, Mexico.
He studied hard and became a surgeon in 1946. A surgeon is a doctor who performs operations. He got his degree from the Escuela Médico Militar. Later, in 1963, he earned another special degree called a Doctor of Science from the National Polytechnic Institute.
Important Work as Health Secretary
When Jesús Kumate Rodríguez was the Secretary of Health, he did many great things for Mexico.
- He made sure that everyone could get vaccinations. Vaccinations are like special shots that protect people from getting sick.
- He helped get rid of a serious disease called poliomyelitis (polio) in Mexico. Polio used to make people unable to move their arms or legs.
- He worked to stop a big outbreak of cholera. Cholera is a disease that causes severe diarrhea.
- He improved how doctors watched for and tracked diseases. This is called epidemiological surveillance. It helps health experts know when and where diseases are spreading.
- He also helped greatly reduce the number of babies who died young. This is known as infant mortality.
Awards and Recognition
Jesús Kumate Rodríguez received many honors for his important work:
- He was given the Legion of Honour from France, which is a very high award. He received it as a Chevalier and later as an Officier.
- In 2006, he was awarded the Belisario Domínguez Medal of Honor. This is one of the highest awards a Mexican citizen can receive.
