Early Life and Education
Jesse Feras Klaver was born on 1 May 1986 in a town called Roosendaal in the Netherlands. His father came from a Moroccan background, and his mother had both Dutch and Indonesian roots. Jesse grew up in a social housing area without his father. His grandparents were very important in raising him. From 1999 to 2004, he went to the Michael College in Prinsenbeek.
Between 2006 and 2009, Jesse was part of the board of DWARS. This is the youth group for the GroenLinks political party. He started as a co-chair, then became a secretary, and finally was elected as the chair. While leading DWARS, he also studied social work at Avans University of Applied Sciences. He also started a master's program in political science but did not finish it.
In 2009, he was chosen to lead the youth union of the CNV. This is a group that helps workers. He said he would focus less on the Christian part of the CNV. He also supported the idea of raising the retirement age to 67. In December 2009, at just 23 years old, he became the youngest member ever on the Social and Economic Council. This council advises the government on important economic and social issues. He also helped write the GroenLinks election plan for 2010.
Starting His Political Career
In 2010, Jesse Klaver was placed seventh on the list of candidates for GroenLinks in the elections. GroenLinks won ten seats, and Jesse became a member of the House of Representatives. This is like being a member of parliament. He spoke about social affairs, jobs, education, and sports. His very first speech in parliament was about higher education.
Political journalists nominated him as "political talent of the year" in 2010. For the 2012 elections, Jesse led the campaign team for GroenLinks. He was fourth on their list of candidates. GroenLinks won four seats, so he was elected again. In 2013, he gave a popular talk on a TV show, which was chosen as the best among five young politicians.
A Leader for GroenLinks
In 2013, Jesse Klaver worked with other politicians to write a plan called "Mooi Nederland" (Beautiful Netherlands). This plan aimed to protect nature, landscapes, and animals. He also proposed a law to reduce food waste by making things more open and clear. In 2014, he wrote a proposal to create "Opportunities for Children in pre-vocational education."
Jesse Klaver gained international attention in 2013 for speaking out against tax evasion. This is when people or companies try to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. He also helped create an agreement about student benefits with the Minister of Education. On 12 May 2015, the leader of GroenLinks, Bram van Ojik, announced that Jesse Klaver would take over as the new party leader right away.
As party leader, Jesse Klaver continued to represent GroenLinks in the 2017 general election. His party did very well, gaining 10 more seats and reaching a total of 14. This was the highest number of seats GroenLinks had ever won. In the 2021 election, the party won 8 seats. He was re-elected in November 2023 on a combined list with the Labour Party. He now focuses on European affairs for his party.
Because of his work in politics, Jesse Klaver was recognized as a "European Young Leader" in 2018. He was also included on the TIME 100 Next List in 2019.
