The Jesse Pickens Pugh Farmstead is a historic farm in rural Clarke County, Alabama. It is near the town of Grove Hill. A farmstead is a group of buildings that make up a farm, like a house, barns, and fields.

This farm covers about 289 acres (117 hectares). It includes a house built in 1865, other farm buildings, fields for crops, and even a family cemetery. The main house has a special roof style called a "half-spraddle roof cottage."

The Jesse Pickens Pugh Farmstead was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 28, 1999. It was recognized for its important and unique building style.

The Pugh Family History

Jesse Pickens Pugh was born on April 17, 1829, in Clarke County, Alabama. His father, Isaac Pugh, was born in Georgia in 1785. His mother, Hanna Baskin, was born in South Carolina in 1793.

Isaac and Hanna Pugh moved to what is now Clarke County in 1810. This was even before the county was officially formed. Jesse's grandfather, Elijah Pugh, also moved there in 1811. Elijah Pugh was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, which means he fought for America's freedom.

Jesse Pugh's Family Life

Jesse Pickens Pugh married Sophia Bettis on January 8, 1858. Sophia was born in 1839. They built their home on this farm in Clarke County.

Jesse and Sophia had ten children together. Nine of their children grew up to be adults. Jesse Pickens Pugh lived a long life and passed away on March 12, 1929. He is buried in the Pugh family cemetery, which is part of the farmstead.
