History of Grove Hill
The land where Grove Hill is now was first home to the Creek and Choctaw Native American tribes. During the Creek War, settlers in the area found safety at Fort White.
Grove Hill became the county seat of Clarke County in 1832. This spot was chosen because it was in the middle of the county. The town was called Smithville, then Macon, before its name changed to Grove Hill around 1850. This new name came from the many oak trees growing on a high area. The town officially became a town in 1929. In 1853, a serious illness called yellow fever spread through the town. Many people got sick and passed away, which greatly affected the town.
