Discovering Jessica Burkhart's Journey
Jessica Burkhart was born on January 29, 1987. From a young age, she loved horses and horse riding. This passion for horses later became a big part of her stories. She also developed a strong interest in writing.
Early Life and Education
As a child, Jessica enjoyed writing. Her articles were even featured in magazines like The Writer. She started college when she was only 16 years old. In 2007, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Florida State University.
How Her Books Began
In 2006, Jessica wrote a full book manuscript. She did this during National Novel Writing Month, a fun challenge where people try to write a novel in one month. A literary agent discovered her work by reading her blog. This agent offered to read her book, which led to Jessica signing with them.
Her first novel, called Take the Reins, went through some changes. In May 2007, she signed a deal to write four books with Simon & Schuster, a big publishing company. Take the Reins became the first book in the Canterwood Crest series. This series tells the story of different schoolgirls who compete in horse riding at a special academy.
Expanding Her Stories
Throughout 2008, Jessica worked on more books for the Canterwood Crest series. She also helped promote her first book online. She did this by writing on her blog and making videos, which is called vlogging. The Canterwood Crest series became very popular and was later extended.
In 2010, Jessica shared her plans to write books for older teens, known as young adult fiction. She decided to use her real name for these books. However, she continued to write her popular middle-grade fiction books as Jessica Burkhart.
In late 2013, it was announced that Jessica would write another middle-grade series. This new series is called West Coast Prep. It follows a new group of characters at a riding school in California. These books were released as eBooks. Jessica also planned to continue the Canterwood Crest series with about 20 shorter e-novellas.
