Jessica Landseer facts for kids
Jessica Landseer (1810–1880) was a talented English artist. She was known for painting beautiful landscapes and small, detailed pictures called miniatures. Jessica came from a family of artists. Her father, John Landseer, was an engraver, and her brothers, Edwin and Thomas, were also famous artists.
Her Life as a Painter
Jessica Landseer was born on January 29, 1810. Her parents were Jane Potts and John Landseer. She started showing her artwork very early in her life.
Between 1816 and 1866, Jessica displayed many of her paintings. She showed ten pictures at the Royal Academy of Arts, seven at the British Institution, and six at the Suffolk Street Gallery. She also created etchings, which are prints made from a metal plate. Some of her etchings were based on her brother Edwin's work, like "Vixen," a Scottish Terrier dog, and "Lady Louisa Russell feeding a Donkey" (1826).
Jessica stopped exhibiting her art for a while. This was because she was busy taking care of her brother, Edwin Landseer. He was a very famous painter, and she kept house for him. Even though she wasn't showing her work, she continued to paint.
She started exhibiting again in 1863. At this time, she was still caring for Edwin, who was not in good health. After 1863, she mostly showed her art at the Society of Female Artists.
Her brother Edwin passed away in 1873. He left Jessica a large amount of money. After his death, she moved to Kensington Park Gardens and even had her own carriage.
Jessica Landseer never married. She died in Folkestone on August 29, 1880. In her will, she left money to charities that helped animals.
