Jevetta Steele's Early Life
Jevetta Steele grew up in Gary, Indiana. She later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her first plan was to become a criminal lawyer. However, she soon found her passion for music and acting. She started a solo career and also joined a gospel group. This group was called The Steeles. Her sister Jearlyn and her three brothers JD, Fred, and Billy were also in the group.
Jevetta Steele's Musical Journey
Starting on Stage
In 1983, Jevetta got a main role in a touring play. It was called The Gospel at Colonus. She played the character of Ismene. After this, she appeared in many other stage shows. Some of these included Smokey Joe's Cafe and Ain't Misbehavin'. She also wrote her own musical. It was named Two Queens, One Castle. This show was very well-received.
Her Famous Song "Calling You"
Jevetta worked with Bob Telson, who wrote music for The Gospel at Colonus. Their teamwork led to her most famous song. It was called "Calling You". This song was featured in the 1988 movie Bagdad Café. The song was so popular that it was nominated for an Academy Award. "Calling You" became Jevetta's first single. It was a big hit on the radio in Europe. It even reached the top 10 in Sweden and France. Her success in France helped her get a record deal there. In 1989, she released another song, "I Will Remember".
Working with Prince and Other Artists
Starting in 1988, Jevetta Steele became a very popular singer for recording sessions. She often worked alone or with her family group, The Steeles. Through these sessions, she met the famous musician Prince. She worked closely with him from 1989 to 1995. She provided vocals for his songs and for other artists he produced.
While doing these sessions, Jevetta also worked on her first album. It was titled Here It Is. Most of the album was recorded at Paisley Park. It was produced by Tommy LiPuma, Ricky Peterson, and Maurice White. The album was first released only in France in 1991. It was later reissued in 1993.
Her debut album reached number 15 on the Blues & Soul UK Hiplist chart. It also included her hit song "Calling You". The Japanese version of the album had a cover of Dionne Warwick's "Say A Little Prayer For You". In the same year, her group The Steeles released their first album, Heaven Help Us All.
You can also hear Jevetta's voice in the 1994 movie Corrina, Corrina. She sings the classic song "Over the Rainbow". She has recorded and toured with many other famous artists. These include George Clinton, 10,000 Maniacs, and Mavis Staples. She also sang backing vocals on two songs for the Norwegian group a-ha. Her most recent album is My Heart, released in 2006. It features both new and classic jazz songs.
