The Jewett-Eastman House is a special old house in South Berwick, Maine. It was built around 1850. This house is a great example of the Greek Revival architecture style.
It is famous because the Jewett family lived here. This family included a well-known local businessman and a doctor. The famous writer Sarah Orne Jewett also grew up in this house. For a while, the house was the town's public library. Today, Historic New England owns it. It is used as a gallery and a visitor center for the Sarah Orne Jewett House next door.
About the Jewett-Eastman House
The Jewett-Eastman House is on the north side of Portland Street. It is close to Main Street in the middle of South Berwick's main village. The Sarah Orne Jewett House, which is a National Historic Landmark, is right next to it.
The house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down from the front. The outside is covered with clapboard siding. The main front door is on the right side of the house. It is set back a bit and has Doric columns on each side. There is a decorative piece above the door. The front of the house looks like a triangle, with columns at the corners.
Who lived here?
Theodore Furbur Jewett built this house around 1850. He built it for his son, Theodore Herman Jewett. Theodore Herman Jewett had been living in his father's house. His first daughter, Sarah Orne Jewett, was born there in 1849.
Theodore Herman Jewett raised his children in this house. Later, the house went to his daughter Carol. She received it when she married Edwin Eastman. The Jewett family home next door was given to Sarah and her sister Mary. They were both unmarried and had no children.
Theodore Jewett Eastman was the son of Carol and Edwin Eastman. He gave both houses to a group called the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. This group is now known as Historic New England (HNE).
What the house was used for
In the 1970s, the house was changed to become the South Berwick Public Library. In 1984, the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities sold the house to a local non-profit group.
In 2011, Historic New England bought the house back. This happened after the library moved to a new building. Now, the Jewett-Eastman House is used as a gallery. It is also a place for events. Most importantly, it serves as the visitor center for the Sarah Orne Jewett House right next door.
