Jian (era) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jian (also called Chi'an) was a special way of counting years in ancient Japan. It was like a time period or an "era name" (called nengō in Japanese). The Jian era started in February 1021 and ended in July 1024. Before Jian came the Kannin era, and after it was the Manju era. During this time, the emperor of Japan was Emperor Go-Ichijō.

Key Events During the Jian Era

The Jian era, though short, had a few important moments:

  • 1023 (Jian 3, 4th month): A serious sickness spread through Kyoto, the capital city. This disease quickly moved across the whole country.
  • 1023 (Jian 3, 10th month): A very important leader named Fujiwara no Michinaga made a trip to Mount Koya. This mountain is a famous and sacred place in Japan.
  • December 29, 1023 (Jian 3, 14th day of the 11th month): People living in Japan during this time would have seen a lunar eclipse. This is when the Earth passes between the Moon and the Sun, making the Moon look dark.
