Jigsaw was a fun and brain-teasing TV show from the BBC. It was made for children aged 4 to 7. The show aired from July 16, 1979, until June 15, 1984. It combined exciting puzzles with entertainment.
What Was Jigsaw?
Jigsaw was a unique children's TV show on BBC One. It was created by Clive Doig. The show encouraged young viewers to solve puzzles. Each episode had smaller puzzles to solve. These puzzles would then help solve one big mystery. This main puzzle was revealed at the end of the show. Viewers at home were encouraged to join in and solve the puzzles too!
Who Was In The Show?
The show had a great team of presenters and characters. Adrian Hedley was a mime artist. Janet Ellis was another main presenter. They were joined by "Jigg," a giant orange jigsaw piece. Jigg's voice was done by John Leeson.
In 1983, Janet Ellis left the show. She became a presenter on Blue Peter. A new character named Dot then joined the team. Dot was played by Julia Binsted.

Jigsaw was known for its many unusual characters. These characters helped make the show exciting.
- Paul Clayton was a featured supporting actor.
- Biggum the giant was another memorable character.
- Wilf Lunn appeared as a mad inventor.
- Pterry was a puppet Pterodactyl. Joe Barton operated this puppet.
- Cid Sleuth was a bumbling detective. He looked a bit like Sherlock Holmes. David Cleveland played Cid Sleuth.
- Hector The Hedgehog was another animal character.
- Dot was a special character. She was like the "cursor dot" from old TV screens.
- The O-Men were two clumsy superheroes. Sylvester McCoy and David Rappaport played them. They would appear if someone said six words in a row with a double-O sound.
- Mr. Noseybonk was a very famous character. Adrian Hedley performed him. Mr. Noseybonk wore a dinner suit and a white mask. The mask had a big nose and a wide, toothy grin. This character was known for being both funny and a little bit scary to children!
