Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jiibayaabooz (pronounced Jee-bah-YAA-booz) is a special character in the traditional stories of the Ojibwe people. His name means "Spirit Rabbit" or "Ghost of Rabbit." You might also hear him called Chipiapoos or Cheeby-aub-oozoo. In the stories of the Abenaki people, he is known as Mateguas, which also means "Rabbit." Jiibayaabooz is often seen as a trickster spirit, a clever character who sometimes plays tricks but also teaches important lessons. He plays a big part in many stories, including how the world was created. In some traditions, he was the second or third son of a human mother named Wiininwaa ("Nourishment") and a spirit father named E-bangishimog ("In the West").

Who is Jiibayaabooz?

Jiibayaabooz is a fascinating figure whose stories are full of mystery and spiritual meaning. When he was alive, he was very interested in the manitous (powerful spirits) and how humans and spirits interacted. He often talked with the manitous through his dreams. Because of this, he taught humans how important dreams were and how they could communicate with the spirit world.

Jiibayaabooz and His Brother

Like many younger brothers, Jiibayaabooz was sometimes teased by his older brother, Majiikiwis. But Majiikiwis's actions went too far one day. Jiibayaabooz sadly died because of a dare from his elder brother.

The Spirit Rabbit's Teachings

Even after his death, Jiibayaabooz's jiibay (which means "Ghost") continued his strong interest in the manitous. As a spirit, he kept teaching humans important ceremonies. These included the rites for vision quests, which are journeys to find spiritual guidance, and purification ceremonies, which help cleanse the body and spirit.

Basil Johnston, a well-known Ojibwe author, also wrote that Jiibayaabooz became the "Chief of the Underworld." He also shared that Jiibayaabooz gave the Anishinaabe people the gift of music, chants, and poetry. These gifts are still very important in their culture today.

Mateguas in Abenaki Stories

Among the Abenaki people, the character similar to Jiibayaabooz is Mateguas. After Mateguas died, he taught his living brother, Gluskab, important rituals. These rituals included vision quests and purification ceremonies. Mateguas taught Gluskab these things to comfort him and help him deal with his sadness. These teachings became the main part of the Midewiwin rituals. Gluskab then passed these important ceremonies and traditions on to all humans.
