Jill Janus (born Jill Janiszewski on September 2, 1975 – died August 14, 2018) was an American singer. She was best known as the lead singer for the heavy metal band Huntress. She also sang for the bands The Starbreakers and Chelsea Girls.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Jill Janus was born in the Catskills Mountains. As a child, she was interested in ancient spiritual beliefs. She started singing opera when she was young. Later, as a teenager, she became very interested in thrash metal music. Jill went to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy for her college education.

Music Career Highlights

Jill Janus worked in cabaret before her metal music career. She performed at a place called Windows on the World. In 2003, Jill began her journey in metal music. She joined a band called Vexy Strut and sang with them until 2006.

In 2009, Jill started her own band, Huntress. She invited members from another metal band, Professor, to join her. As the lead singer of Huntress, she recorded three studio albums. The last album was called Static, released in 2015.

In 2015, Jill announced that Huntress was breaking up. However, the band's guitarist, Blake Meahl, later said this was not true.

Besides her work with Huntress, Jill also sang with other bands. She filled in for Johan Hegg, the lead singer of Amon Amarth, during a tour in 2015. Jill was also the lead singer for two cover bands: Chelsea Girls and The Starbreakers. A cover band plays songs originally made famous by other artists.

Jill also helped write a rock opera called Victory: The Rock Opera with guitarist Angus Clark. She recorded vocals for Brian Posehn's album Grandpa Metal. Her voice can be heard on the song "Goblin Love" and a cover of "Take On Me". This cover song was released in November 2019.

Musical Style and Influences

Jill Janus was inspired by many different rock and heavy metal artists. She looked up to rock singers like Ann Wilson. She also admired Freddie Mercury for his amazing voice. In heavy metal, Jill listed singers like Rob Halford, King Diamond, and Jared Warren as her favorites.

Jill said she had a wide vocal range, meaning she could sing many different notes. She described her voice as a coloratura soprano. This type of singer can sing very high notes with lots of fancy runs.

For the band Huntress, Jill shared that each album was based on a different part of her life. She also connected each Huntress album to a part of the Triple Goddess from ancient spiritual beliefs.
