Virginia Hyde "Jill" Krementz (born February 19, 1940) is a famous American photographer and author. She has created 31 books, mostly filled with her amazing photographs. Many of her books are also for children. Jill Krementz was married to the well-known writer Kurt Vonnegut for nearly 30 years.

Early Life and Photography Journey
Jill Krementz grew up in Morristown, New Jersey. In her late teens, she moved to New York City, where she was born. On her 21st birthday in 1961, she received a Nikon camera. This gift helped her start a career as a photographer. She also became a photojournalist, which means she took pictures for news stories.
In the 1960s, Jill worked for a newspaper called the New York Herald-Tribune. Her colorful photos of the 1967 March on the Pentagon were even shown on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. In 1965, she spent a year in Vietnam taking pictures during the Vietnam War. Her news photos have also appeared in The New York Observer.
Photographing Famous Writers
Later in her career, Jill Krementz became known for photographing writers. In 1970, she decided to create a large collection of author pictures. She built a huge library of photographs of writers. Most of her pictures at that time were in black and white. She worked with simple camera gear. By 1975, she had photographed about 542 authors. Four years later, that number grew to over 800!
Family Life and Recognition
In 1970, Jill Krementz met the famous writer Kurt Vonnegut. They met during the making of his play Happy Birthday, Wanda June. They got married in 1979. In 1982, they adopted a baby girl named Lily. Jill and Kurt remained married until his death in 2007.
Jill Krementz's photographs were shown at the Nikon House Gallery in New York in the mid-1970s. In 1980, she published a book called The Writer's Image. This book featured her black-and-white photos of authors. Kurt Vonnegut wrote the introduction for the book. In 1984, Jill Krementz won the Washington Post/Children’s Book Guild Nonfiction Award. This award is for books that are creative and make a difference.
In 2004, a big exhibition of her work was held. It was at the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Connecticut. The exhibition was called Writers Unbound. It showed warm and personal pictures of authors. You could see them in their homes and at their desks.
