Professor Jill Slay, a leading expert in computer security.

Jill Slay is a brilliant engineer and computer scientist from both Britain and Australia. She is known around the world for her important work. She even received a special award called the Order of Australia. This award was given to her for helping the world of information technology. She made big contributions in areas like finding clues on computers (called forensic computer science), keeping computers safe (security), protecting important systems (critical infrastructure), and fighting online threats (cyberterrorism).

Jill Slay's Journey

Jill Slay started her education by studying mechanical engineering. She earned her first degree with honors in 1975 from the University of Hertfordshire in England. After working as an engineer for some time, she went back to university. She earned a special advanced degree called a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in science education in 2000. She completed this at Curtin University in Australia.

After getting her Ph.D., Jill Slay began working as a researcher. She focused on information security at the University of South Australia. During this time, the South Australia Police asked for her help. They needed her skills to solve cases that involved computer devices.

After 12 years, Jill Slay moved to Namibia in Africa. There, she became the Dean of IT at the Polytechnic of Namibia. This school is now known as the Namibia University of Science and Technology. In 2014, she came back to Australia. She helped start and lead the Australian Cyber Security Centre. She worked as a professor at the Australian Defence Force Academy through the University of New South Wales in Canberra.

Awards and Recognition

Jill Slay has received many important awards for her work. In 2011, she was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). This is a very high honor in Australia.

She is also a Fellow of two important groups:

  • The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium.
  • The Australian Computer Society.

In 2015, Jill Slay was named the InfoSec Educator of the Year by the Australian Information Security Association. This award recognized her great work in teaching others about computer security.
