James Stewart Hunter Morrison (born October 11, 1931) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He was a defenceman, which means he played a position in hockey that helps protect his team's goal. Jim Morrison was also a coach and a scout after his playing days.
He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for several teams. These teams included the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, and Pittsburgh Penguins. His NHL career spanned from 1951 to 1961, and then again from 1969 to 1971. Jim also played in the minor American Hockey League (AHL). His entire hockey career lasted from 1951 to 1973. He was known as a fast skater and a defenceman who could score many goals and assists. This was quite special for a player in his position.
Playing in the AHL
Jim Morrison played eight seasons with the Quebec Aces. He also spent three seasons with the Baltimore Clippers. Both of these teams were part of the American Hockey League. In the 1965–66 season, Jim won the Eddie Shore Award. This award is given to the best defenceman in the AHL.
After His Playing Career
After Jim Morrison stopped playing hockey, he became a coach. He coached the Kitchener Rangers for a short time. Then, he coached the Kingston Canadians (which later became the Kingston Frontenacs) for seven seasons. Later, Jim worked as a scout for the Boston Bruins team for 18 years. A scout finds new talented players for the team. Jim's son, Dave Morrison, also became involved in ice hockey.
