James Emerson Delaney (born August 12, 1924 – died June 25, 1947) was a talented boxer known as Jimmy Doyle. He was a welterweight boxer, which means he competed in a specific weight class. Sadly, he passed away in 1947 after a boxing match against the famous boxer Sugar Ray Robinson.
About Jimmy Doyle
Jimmy Doyle was born James Emerson Delaney in Los Angeles, California on August 12, 1924. His parents, Edward and Marie Elodie Barret, were from New Orleans. They moved to Los Angeles in 1921. Jimmy's family had roots in the Creole community, a group with French-speaking heritage.
Boxing Career
Jimmy Doyle started his professional boxing career in 1941. He quickly became known for his skills in the ring. He had many fights during his career. In 1947, he faced off against the legendary boxer Sugar Ray Robinson.
The Last Fight
In 1947, Jimmy Doyle fought Sugar Ray Robinson for the World Welterweight Title. The fight was very intense. Robinson was ahead in most rounds. However, Doyle managed to surprise him in the sixth round.
The fight ended in the eighth round. Robinson landed a strong punch, and Doyle fell to the canvas. He tried to get up but could not. The bell rang, ending the round, which saved him from a full knockout. His team decided he could not continue the match.
Doyle was taken to the hospital right after the fight. Sadly, he did not wake up and passed away a few hours later. A Catholic priest gave him last rites, and Sugar Ray Robinson rushed to the hospital to be there.
Jimmy Doyle was fighting in Cleveland, Ohio. This was because the boxing commission in California would not let him fight there anymore. This was due to some tough knockouts he had experienced before.
After Jimmy Doyle's passing, Sugar Ray Robinson showed great kindness. Doyle had been fighting to earn money to "buy his mother a house." Robinson gave the money from his next four fights to Doyle's mother. This helped her buy the house Jimmy had dreamed of getting for her.
