Who Was Jimmy McMath?
Jimmy McMath was a talented baseball player who got to play in the big leagues, even if it was for a short time. He was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He played mostly as a left fielder, which means he covered the left side of the outfield.
Starting His Baseball Journey
Jimmy's baseball journey began when he was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 1967 amateur draft. This is like a special selection process where teams pick young players. After being drafted, he joined the Cubs' minor league system. Minor leagues are where young players learn and improve their skills before playing in Major League Baseball. His first team was the Caldwell Cubs in the Pioneer League.
Rising Through the Ranks
In 1968, Jimmy started to get noticed. He played for the Quincy Cubs and had a really good batting average of .388 in 51 games. A batting average shows how often a player gets a hit. Because he played so well, he was moved up to the Double-A San Antonio Missions. He continued to play well there, hitting .263 in 75 games.
Later that year, when he was just 19 years old, Jimmy got a big promotion! He was called up to play for the Chicago Cubs in Major League Baseball. He was the youngest player in the National League that year. He played in six games, getting two hits in 14 tries, which gave him a .143 batting average. He also had two runs batted in (RBIs), meaning he helped two teammates score runs.
Back to the Minor Leagues
After his short time in the Major Leagues, Jimmy spent 1969 playing for San Antonio and the Triple-A Tacoma Cubs. Triple-A is the highest level in the minor leagues, just below Major League Baseball. He played for Tacoma again in 1970.
In 1971, he went back to play for San Antonio and then Quincy. After that season, his baseball career ended when he was just 22 years old. Overall, Jimmy McMath played in 398 minor league games from 1967 to 1971. He had a .269 batting average and hit 22 home runs during his minor league career.
Later Life
Jimmy McMath passed away in Meadville, Mississippi, when he was 60 years old.
