James Alfred Smith Preston (born August 18, 1913 – died December 17, 1984) was an American musician. He was a bandleader, played the alto saxophone and drums, and was also a singer. James Preston made important contributions to early rock and roll music. He was known for his R&B style.

Music Career of James Preston
James Preston was born in Chester, Pennsylvania. He started his own music group in 1945. His first big hit song was "Hucklebuck Daddy" in 1949. This song made it into the top ten R&B charts. He recorded it with a company called Gotham Records in Philadelphia.
Recording "Rock the Joint"
James Preston became very famous for recording the first version of the song "Rock the Joint". He recorded it in 1949 with his band, called Jimmy Preston and His Prestonians. The cool saxophone parts in "Rock the Joint" were played by Danny Turner. Other musicians later recorded their own versions of "Rock the Joint". Jimmy Cavallo recorded it in 1951. Then, Bill Haley and the Saddlemen recorded it in 1952.
Later Music and New Members
In 1950, James Preston added new musicians to his band. These included tenor saxophone player Benny Golson and pianist Billy Gaines. They recorded more songs like "Early Morning Blues" and "Hayride". Preston then moved to a different record company called Derby Records. He had one last R&B hit song there. It was a cover of "Oh Babe," originally by Louis Prima.
Later Life and Legacy
James Preston stopped playing music in 1952. Later, he became a reverend. In 1962, he founded the Victory Baptist Church. He was known as Reverend Dr. James S. Preston. He passed away in Philadelphia in 1984 when he was 71 years old.
