About Jing Liu

Jing Liu was born in Nanjing, China. When she was a teenager, she moved around a lot. She studied in China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. From 1999 to 2004, she studied architecture at Tulane University in New Orleans. She then moved to New York in 2004.

In 2008, Jing Liu started SO – IL with another architect, Florian Idenburg. They quickly became known for their unique designs.

Cool Projects by SO-IL

In 2010, their company won a big award. They designed an amazing, playful structure for the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program. It was very experimental and people could interact with it.

After that, they designed the award-winning Kukje Gallery in Seoul, South Korea. This building was special because it showed a new way of thinking about architecture. It was like a modern building that fit well with our digital world.

In 2012 and 2013, SO – IL designed the first-ever Frieze Art Fair in New York City. They had to be very creative because they used simple rental tents. They made the straight tents bend into a cool, winding shape. This made the temporary building look exciting by the water. It also became a recognizable symbol along the waterfront.

In 2013, SO – IL won a competition to design a new art museum. This was for the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis.
