Jinki (era) facts for kids
Jinki (神亀) was a special way to count years in Japan, like how we use "AD" or "CE" today. It's called a Japanese era name (年号,, nengō,, lit. "year name"). The Jinki period came after an era called Yōrō and before Tenpyō.
This era began in February 724 and lasted until August 729. During this time, the ruler of Japan was Emperor Shōmu-tennō (聖武天皇). The name "Jinki" itself means "Sacred tortoise," which was a special and important symbol back then.
Important Events During the Jinki Era
- 727 (Jinki 4): Emperor Shōmu sent special inspectors all over the country. Their job was to check on how well all the government officials were doing their work in different areas. This helped the emperor make sure everything was running smoothly.
- 728 (Jinki 5): An important visitor, an ambassador from Korea, came to the Japanese court. This visit was a big deal because it showed the connection and communication between Japan and other countries.
