Joëlle Milquet, born on February 17, 1961, is a Belgian politician. She is a member of the Humanist Democratic Centre (CDH) party. She has held several important roles in the Belgian government.

Early Life and Education
Joëlle Milquet grew up in Belgium. She studied classics at the Institute of the Sisters of Saint Andrew in Charleroi. Later, she went to the Université Catholique de Louvain and earned a law degree in 1984. In 1985, she continued her studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), focusing on European law.
Political Career Highlights
Joëlle Milquet began her career as a lawyer in Brussels. She became involved in politics and served in the Belgian Senate from 1995 to 1999.
Leading the CDH Party
After her time in the Senate, Joëlle Milquet became the president of the Humanist Democratic Centre (CDH) party. She played a big part in forming the Belgian government in 2007-2008. During these talks, some people called her "Madame Non" (Mrs. No). This was because she strongly believed that different parts of Belgium should not get too much independence.
Serving as Deputy Prime Minister
In 2008, Joëlle Milquet became the Deputy Prime Minister. She also served as the Minister for Employment and Equal Opportunities in the Leterme I Government. She continued to hold important positions in later governments, including the Van Rompuy I Government and the Leterme II Government.
From 2011 to 2014, she was the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. She was also responsible for Equalities in the Di Rupo Government. In June 2014, she became the Minister of Lower Education and Culture in the Government of the French Community.
Later Roles and Advisory Work
Until 2016, Ms. Milquet was the Vice Minister-President and Minister for Education and Culture in the Government of the French Community. She now chairs the Security Committee of Brussels' Regional Parliament. In 2017, she was appointed as a Special Adviser to President Jean-Claude Juncker. Her role was to help victims of crime get compensation.
In January 2021, Joëlle Milquet was named President of the Strategic and Advisory Committee for the European Centre for Electoral Support. This organization helps with elections and democracy projects around the world. The European Union and its member countries provide funding for its work.
