Jože Šmit (born February 1, 1922 – died February 7, 2004) was a famous Slovene poet, translator, editor, and journalist. He wrote many books, including some special ones for young readers.
About Jože Šmit
Jože Šmit was born in 1922 in a small village called Tlake, near Rogatec in eastern Slovenia. His childhood home is now a special part of the Rogatec Open-Air Museum. It was moved there in 1981 to show what a typical house from the early 1800s looked like.
During World War II, Jože studied forestry in Vienna. He was later drafted into the German Army. He was captured during the Invasion of Normandy and became a prisoner of war in England. Later, he went to Italy and joined the Yugoslav Liberation Army. After the war, he returned to Yugoslavia.
He worked as a journalist and also studied literature at the University of Ljubljana. Jože was a talented editor and proof-reader. He was also well-known for translating books, especially from Latin. He translated works by the ancient poet Catullus.
Jože Šmit loved writing for young people. He created many poems and stories especially for children. In 1970, he won the important Levstik Award for his poetry collection called Kako bomo umirali (How We Shall Die). He passed away in Ljubljana in 2004.
