Jo-Ann Archibald, also known as Q’um Q’um Xiiem, is an important Indigenous studies scholar from the Sto:lo First Nation in British Columbia, Canada. She has dedicated her career to education and sharing Indigenous knowledge.

Dr. Archibald studied at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University. She earned her teaching degree in 1972. Later, she received her Master's degree in 1984 and her Ph.D. in 1997. Dr. Archibald also led the First Nations House of Learning at UBC from 1993 to 2001.

She worked as an Associate Dean for Indigenous Education at UBC. She also helped lead the Native Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP) from 1985 to 1992. Dr. Archibald even directed an international research institute. Her main focus is how important Indigenous stories are for learning in schools.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Archibald has received many important awards for her work. In 1995, she won the Justice Achievement Award. This was for creating a special learning program about justice for First Nations.

In 2000, she received the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Education. This award celebrates the achievements of Indigenous people in Canada. In 2013, the American Educational Research Association honored her. They gave her the Scholars of Color Distinguished Career Contribution Award.

Published Works

Dr. Archibald has written many books and articles. She has also helped other authors with their books. Her work often focuses on the power of Indigenous stories and education.
