JoAnn Haysbert (born JoAnn Wright) is an important American educator and university leader. She currently works at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. There, she holds big jobs like Chancellor, Executive Vice-President, and Provost. Before this, she made history as the first female president of Langston University. She was also the first African-American woman to lead any college in Oklahoma.

JoAnn Haysbert's Career Journey
Starting in Education
After earning her special doctor's degree from Auburn University, Dr. Haysbert began her career. She held teaching and leadership jobs at Auburn University itself. She also worked at Virginia State University and Alexander City State Junior College.
Time at Hampton University
Dr. Haysbert then joined Hampton University, a very old and respected private college. It is sometimes called a "Black Ivy" school. She worked in many different roles there for 25 years.
- She was the first acting president, meaning she temporarily led the university.

Leading Langston University
In 2005, Dr. Haysbert left Hampton University to become the 15th president of Langston University. She was the first woman to hold this job. She was also the first African-American woman to be a university president in Oklahoma. She served as president until the end of 2011.
Return to Hampton University
In 2012, Dr. Haysbert returned to Hampton University. She took on new, important roles. She became the university's first Chancellor and Executive Vice-President. She also continued her work as Provost.

Early Life and Education
JoAnn Wright was born in Kingstree, South Carolina, in 1948. She went to several colleges. She graduated from Johnson C. Smith University. While there, she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, which was the first sorority for Black college women in the U.S. She also studied at Auburn University. Later, she attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education for a special program.
Family Life
In 1980, JoAnn married Stanley Haysbert. He works in real estate. Stanley is the brother of famous actor Dennis Haysbert. JoAnn and Stanley have five children together.
