JoAnn Haysbert (born Wright) is an important American educator and leader in universities. She currently serves as the Chancellor, Executive Vice-President, and Provost of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Before this, she was the fifteenth president of Langston University from 2005 to 2011. She was the first woman to lead Langston University. She was also the first African-American woman to be president of any university in Oklahoma.

JoAnn Haysbert's Career in Education
After earning her doctorate degree from Auburn University, JoAnn Haysbert worked at several schools. She held academic jobs at Auburn University, Virginia State University, and Alexander City State Junior College.
Her Time at Hampton University
Before becoming president of Langston University, Dr. Haysbert spent 25 years at Hampton University. Hampton is a historic private university sometimes called a "Black Ivy" school. During her time there, she held many different leadership roles. These included being the first acting president, provost, and assistant provost. She also worked as a professor, a coordinator for graduate programs, and a dean of freshman studies. She was also an assistant vice president for academic affairs and a director for summer sessions.
Leading Langston University
In 2005, Dr. Haysbert became the 15th president of Langston University. She took over from Earnest Holloway. She led the university until the end of 2011, when Kent Smith became the new president.
Return to Hampton University
In 2012, Dr. Haysbert returned to Hampton University. She became its first Chancellor and Executive Vice-President. She also continued her role as Provost.
Early Life and Education
JoAnn Wright was born in Kingstree, South Carolina, in 1948. She attended several universities for her education. She graduated from Johnson C. Smith University. While there, she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, which was the first sorority for Black college women in the U.S. She also studied at Auburn University and the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Institute for Educational Management.
In 1980, she married Stanley Haysbert, who works in real estate. They have five children together.
