Joan McNamara, who the business is named after, is a chef from New York. Before moving to Los Angeles, she ran a cooking school and her own restaurant there. In 1995, she opened Joan's on West Third Street as a catering company.

Joan's two daughters also help run the business. Carol, who studied hotel management, handles the catering and special events. Susie, who studied business, takes care of how the store operates every day. In 1997, a chef named Chester Hastings joined the team and later married Susie McNamara.

Growing Bigger and Better

In 1998, Joan's expanded into the store next door on Third Street. This helped Joan achieve her dream of having a gourmet food market and café. "Gourmet" means high-quality and special food.

Another big expansion happened in 2007. This made the market's space three times larger! Besides being a market, Joan's is also a full restaurant. You can sit down and eat there, or you can get take-out meals to enjoy at home. Joan's is often very busy and reminds some people of famous food markets in New York City, like Zabar's or Dean & DeLuca.
