Joan Carretero i Grau was born in 1955 in Tremp, a town in Catalonia, Spain. He is a doctor and a politician. He served as the mayor of Puigcerdà and later became a minister in the Catalan Government.

Joan Carretero's Education and Medical Career
Joan Carretero studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona. He earned his degree in 1978. He also has special training in Health from the Escola Nacional de Salut in Lleida.
He completed a master's degree in Public Health at the University of Barcelona. Public Health focuses on improving the health of communities. He has worked as a doctor in different towns. Currently, he works as a doctor in Puigcerdà.
Joan Carretero's Community Involvement
Beyond his medical work, Joan Carretero has been active in his community. He was a member of the parents' association at Vedruna School in Puigcerdà. This group helps support the school and its students.
He also served as the president of Club de Futbol Puigcerdà, which is the local football (soccer) club. He is also a fan of FC Barcelona, a very famous football club.
Joan Carretero's Political Journey
Joan Carretero joined a political party called ERC in 1990. ERC stands for Republican Left of Catalonia. This party supports Catalonia having more self-rule or even becoming an independent country.
He was removed from the ERC party in 2009. This happened because he openly disagreed with the party's leaders. After leaving ERC, he decided to start his own political party.
On October 3, 2009, he created a new party called Reagrupament. This party also supports Catalan independentism, meaning it wants Catalonia to be an independent country. However, Reagrupament did not win enough votes to have members in the Catalan parliament.
Joan Carretero's Time in Government
Joan Carretero first became the mayor of Puigcerdà in 1995. He ran for mayor with the ERC party and won. He served as mayor for eight years.
In December 2003, he stopped being mayor. He was chosen to become a minister in the Catalan Government. A minister is a high-ranking official who leads a specific part of the government. He was the Counsellor of Governance and Public Administration.
He held this important position until April 2006. After that, he was replaced by another person.
