Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira (born 17 May 1952 in Cambrils, Catalonia, Spain) is a well-known Catalan politician. He served as the Vice President of the Catalan Government from 2006 to 2010. Before that, he was the leader of the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) party from 1996 to 2008.
The ERC party works to achieve Catalonia's independence from Spain. They also aim to extend this independence to other areas where Catalan is spoken. After the 2006 Catalan regional election, he became one of the two Vice Presidents of the Catalan government. Today, he is the Vice President of the Ramon Llull Foundation.
Earlier, after the 2003 Catalan election, he was named First Minister of the Generalitat de Catalunya, which is the government of Catalonia. He later resigned from this role.

Education and Early Career
Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira studied Catalan philology at the University of Barcelona. Philology is the study of language in historical and cultural contexts.
Teaching and Cultural Work
- He taught the Catalan language at the University School of Tarragona from 1978 to 1982.
- He was also a professor and Vice President of the Catalan Summer University from 1986 to 1995.
- From 1981 to 1988, he worked as a Head Technician for the Generalitat de Catalunya's language planning.
- He led the Cultural Services of the Generalitat de Catalunya in Tarragona from 1982 to 1984.

Carod-Rovira has been part of many community groups. These include:
- Òmnium Cultural: He was a board member from 1986 to 1995 and president of its Tarragonès branch.
- Llull-Federació d'Entitats dels Països Catalans: He was a board member from 1991 to 1995.
- Colla Jove Xiquets de Tarragona: This is a castellers association, known for building human towers.

Political Journey
Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira was active in the movement against the authoritarian government of Francisco Franco. In 1973, he was arrested when many members of the Assembly of Catalonia were taken into custody.
Party Membership and Leadership
- Before joining ERC in 1987, he was a member of the Socialist National Liberation Party (PSAN) from 1970 to 1977.
- He was also part of the Left Nationalists (NE) from 1980 to 1986.
- In 1989, Carod-Rovira wrote a resolution about the right to self-determination for the Catalan nation.
He was first elected general secretary of ERC in November 1996. He was re-elected in July 1998 and March 2001. He became president of ERC in July 2004.
Roles in Government
After the Catalan elections in 2003, he became First Minister of the Catalan government. This was from December 2003 to January 2004. He later resigned from this role.
In the elections of March 2004, he was a candidate for the Spanish Congress of Deputies. His party, ERC, won eight seats, greatly increasing their support. This was a big step for ERC, which had only had one seat since 1979. After these elections, Carod-Rovira chose to remain in the Catalan Parliament instead of serving as a deputy in the Spanish Congress.
Public Service Roles
Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira has been a deputy (a type of representative) in the Parliament of Catalonia since 1988. He also served as First Minister of the Generalitat de Catalunya from December 2003 to January 2004. He was the Vice President of the Catalan Government in its eighth term.
