Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira (born 17 May 1952 in Cambrils, Catalonia, Spain) is a well-known Catalan politician. He served as the Vice-President of the Catalan Government from 2006 to 2010. From 1996 to 2008, he was the leader of the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) political party.

ERC is a party that supports Catalonia becoming an independent country. This means they want Catalonia to be separate from Spain.

After the 2006 regional election in Catalonia, he became one of the two vice presidents. He now works as the vice president of the Ramon Llull Foundation. Before this, after the 2003 election, he was named the First Minister of the Generalitat de Catalunya, which is the government of Catalonia. He later resigned from this role after a meeting he had caused a lot of public discussion.

Education and Early Career

Studying Catalan Language

Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira studied the Catalan language at the University of Barcelona. He earned a bachelor's degree in philology, which is the study of language in historical texts.

Teaching and Cultural Work

From 1978 to 1982, he taught the Catalan language at the University School of Tarragona. He also worked as a professor and vice president at the Catalan Summer University from 1986 to 1995. Earlier, he helped plan language policies for the Generalitat de Catalunya from 1981 to 1988. He also led the Cultural Services of the Generalitat in Tarragona from 1982 to 1984.

Carod-Rovira has been part of many community groups. He was on the board of Òmnium Cultural from 1986 to 1995. He also led its division in Tarragonès. He was involved with Llull-Federació d'Entitats dels Països Catalans. He also joined the castellers association Colla Jove Xiquets de Tarragona. Castellers are groups that build human towers. He was also a member of the Catalan Language Writers Association and the PEN Club of Catalonia.

Published Works

As a writer, he has published several books. These include Rovira i Virgili i la qüestió nacional (1994) and Marcel·lí Domingo, de l'escola a la República (1988). Other books are Tornar amb la gent (1997), Jubilar la Transició (1998), El futur a les mans (2003), and La nova Catalunya (2003). He has also written for encyclopedias and magazines. He has won awards for his historical essays and journalism.

Political Journey

Early Political Activities

Carod-Rovira was active in the fight against the authoritarian government of Franco. In 1973, he was jailed when many members of the Assembly of Catalonia were arrested. Before joining ERC in 1987, he was a member of other political groups. These included the Socialist National Liberation Party (PSAN) from 1970 to 1977. He was also part of Left Nationalists (NE) from 1980 to 1986. In 1989, Carod-Rovira helped write a resolution about the right of self-determination for the Catalan nation. This means the right for Catalonia to decide its own future.

Leadership in ERC

In November 1996, Carod-Rovira was first chosen as the general secretary of ERC. This happened at the party's 21st National Congress in Vilafranca del Penedès. He was reelected to this role in July 1998 in Girona. He was elected again in March 2001 in Tarragona.

Since July 2004, Carod-Rovira has been the president of ERC. This was decided at the party's 24th National Congress in Lleida.

Roles in the Catalan Government

After the 2003 Catalan elections, he became the First Minister of the Catalan government. He held this position from December 2003 to January 2004. He later resigned from this role.

In the Spanish general election of March 2004, he ran for a seat in the Spanish Congress. His party, ERC, won eight seats, which was a big increase in support. This was a major success for ERC. After these elections, Carod-Rovira chose to leave his role as a deputy in the Spanish Congress. He decided to remain in the Catalan Parliament instead.
