Joan Ferrini-Mundy (born in 1954) is an American expert in education. She studies how people learn calculus and how math teachers can improve. She also works on rules for STEM education. Currently, she is the president of the University of Maine.

Joan Ferrini-Mundy's Career in Education
Joan Ferrini-Mundy earned her PhD in math education in 1980. This was from the University of New Hampshire (UNH). She worked there for two years after getting her degree.
Early Teaching Roles
After working at Mount Holyoke College for a year, she returned to UNH. She became a math professor there. In 1999, she joined the team at Michigan State University. A year later, she helped write Standards 2000. This was an important book for math teachers. It came from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Leadership at National Organizations
Ferrini-Mundy also led the Mathematical Sciences Education Board. This group is part of the National Academy of Sciences. Later, she returned to Michigan State University. There, she became an associate dean. She helped lead science and math education.
In 2007, Ferrini-Mundy joined the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is a big government group that supports science. She became the director of a new division. This division studied how people learn in different places. She stayed at Michigan State University until 2010. From 2007 to 2009, she worked on a special education committee.
Leading Science Education
In 2011, Ferrini-Mundy became an assistant director at the NSF. This was a very important job. She helped decide the direction for science education in the country. In 2014, she was chosen to join a special committee. This was for the Association for Women in Mathematics. She served for two years.
In 2017, she became the chief operating officer of the NSF. This meant she helped manage how the NSF worked every day. A year later, she left the NSF. She became the 21st president of the University of Maine.
Current Role at University of Maine
Since 2018, Joan Ferrini-Mundy has been the president of the University of Maine. In 2021, she also got another important role. She became the vice chancellor for research and innovation. This means she helps all universities in the University of Maine System. She makes sure they can do their research well.
Awards and Special Recognition
Joan Ferrini-Mundy has received many awards for her work.
- In 2000, she won the Louise Hay Award. This award is from the Association for Women in Mathematics.
