Lady Joan Holland (born 1350 – died October 1384) was an important noblewoman. She became the Duchess of Brittany when she married John IV, Duke of Brittany. She was his second wife.
Joan's family was very well-known. Her mother was Joan of Kent, and her father was Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent. Her mother, Joan of Kent, later married Edward the Black Prince. Their son was King Richard II of England. This made Joan Holland the half-sister of a future king!
A Royal Marriage
Joan Holland married John IV, the Duke of Brittany, in May 1366. Their wedding took place in London. However, King Edward III of England did not approve of their marriage. King Edward III was Joan's step-grandfather. He believed he had power over Brittany.
Joan and John IV did not have any children together.
Her Later Life
Joan Holland passed away in October 1384. She was only in her thirties. Her death was not ideal for political reasons at the time.
Two years after Joan's death, Duke John IV married again. His new wife was Joan of Navarre. She later became the queen of King Henry IV of England.
