Joan Jameson (born October 4, 1892 – died September 22, 1953) was a talented Irish artist. She was famous for her beautiful paintings. She painted many different things, like still-life pictures, people, and outdoor scenes.

The Early Life of Joan Jameson

Joan Moira Maud Musgrave was born in London on October 4, 1892. She was the older of two daughters. Her father was Sir Richard John Musgrave, a Baronet. Her mother was Jesse Sophia.

Joan studied art at home and in Paris. She went to a famous art school called the Académie Julian. This school helped her learn many artistic skills.

Family and Home Life

On June 11, 1920, Joan married Tom Jameson. He was from Rock House in Ardmore, County Waterford, Ireland. For a few years, Joan and Tom lived in London.

In 1929, they moved back to Tourin, Waterford, Ireland. Joan often visited London to show her artwork. Later, in the 1950s, they moved to Rock House in Ardmore.

Joan had many friends, including other artists and writers. Her friends, like artist Norah McGuinness and writer Molly Keane, often visited her in Waterford. Joan and Tom had two sons, William Shane Musgrave and Julian Richard Musgrave.

Joan Jameson passed away on September 22, 1953. She was buried in Ardmore. A famous sculptor named Seamus Murphy carved her headstone. It showed a palette and paint brushes, celebrating her life as an artist.

Joan Jameson's Artistic Journey

Joan Jameson showed her paintings in several art galleries in London. These included Goupil & Cie, The Redfern Gallery, and the Leicester Galleries. She had her own art shows there in 1933 and 1937. In one show, she displayed sixty of her paintings.

Exhibitions in Ireland

In Dublin, Ireland, Joan exhibited her work with the Society of Dublin Painters. She showed her art there from 1938 to 1948. People thought she was a very talented artist. Critics started noticing her work around 1943.

She also showed her art at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. This was from 1943 to 1953. An art critic named Edward Sheehy said she had "courage and distinction." Another critic, Eric Newton, chose some of her paintings for an exhibition in 1951.

In 1953, her art was part of the Contemporary Irish Art Exhibition in Wales. After she passed away, a special show of her work was held in 1954. Her husband and friends loaned her artworks for this show. Later, in 1989, her paintings were shown again at the Crawford Art Gallery and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
