Joan Mir Mayrata (born September 1, 1997) is a super fast Spanish motorcycle racer! He rides for the Repsol Honda Team in the exciting MotoGP World Championship. Joan is famous for winning the 2020 MotoGP World Championship with Suzuki. He's one of only a few Spanish riders to win this top title.

Before that, he also won the 2017 Moto3 World Championship title. Joan was the first Suzuki rider to win the MotoGP title since 2000. He was also the first rider not on a Honda or Yamaha bike to win since 2007. Plus, he's the first Moto3 champion to also win the top MotoGP title!

Joan Mir's Racing Journey

Starting Out: Early Races

Joan Mir was born in Palma, Spain. He started racing in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. This is a special race series for young riders. He raced there in 2013 and 2014. In 2014, he finished second overall. He won three races and got on the podium six times.

In 2015, Joan raced in the CEV Moto3 Junior World Championship. He won four of the first six races! But he didn't do as well later in the season. He ended up finishing fourth in the championship.

Moto3 World Champion: A Big Win

Joan Mir made his first big Grand Prix race appearance in 2015. He raced for Leopard Racing at Phillip Island. He had to replace an injured rider. He started 18th but didn't finish the race.

In 2016, Joan raced full-time in the Moto3 World Championship. He got his first pole position (starting from the very front). He also won his first Grand Prix race in Austria! This was only his 11th race. He finished on the podium two more times that year. Joan ended the season in 5th place. He was named "Rookie of the Year" for being the best new rider.

In 2017, Joan stayed with Leopard Racing for his second Moto3 season. He was amazing! He won 10 races and got on the podium 13 times out of 18 races. He only missed scoring points in one race. He started from pole position once in Malaysia. Joan won the Moto3 championship by a huge 93 points!

Moving Up: Moto2 Races

In 2018, Joan moved up to the Moto2 class. He joined the Marc VDS Racing Team. He finished third in races in France and Italy. He also finished second in Germany and Australia. He ended the season with four podium finishes. He was 6th in the championship and won "Rookie of the Year" again!

In 2018, Joan decided to move to MotoGP early. He signed a two-year deal with the Suzuki factory team. He was only the second rider to go to MotoGP after just one season in Moto2. In his first MotoGP season in 2019, he often finished in the top 10. He missed two races because of an injury from a crash. His best finish was 5th place in Australia. He finished 12th overall and was the second-best rookie.

Becoming World Champion: 2020

Before the 2020 season started, Suzuki signed Joan for two more years. He had a tough start to the 2020 season, crashing out of two early races. But he quickly got better! He started finishing on the podium very often. He got second place three times and third place twice.

Even though he hadn't won a race yet, Joan was leading the championship! This was because other top riders had inconsistent results.

During a race in France, Joan had a cool moment. He slid off his bike but managed to get back on his feet and start running! He still finished 11th and got some points.

Joan got another podium finish in Teruel. His rivals kept having bad races. This helped Joan get a 14-point lead with only three races left. At the European Grand Prix, Joan finally got his first MotoGP win! He beat his teammate, Álex Rins, who finished second.

With this win, Joan had a big 37-point lead. The next week, at the Valencian Community Grand Prix, Joan finished 7th. This was enough to make him the 2020 MotoGP World Champion! It was a huge achievement for him and Suzuki.

Strong Performances: 2021

Joan started the 2021 season with good finishes in Qatar. In the first race, he almost got second place but finished 4th. In the second race, he finished 7th. This race was famous for a small argument between Joan and another rider, Jack Miller.

Two weeks later, in Portugal, Joan finished 3rd. This was Suzuki's first podium of the season. He kept getting good results, including another 3rd place in Mugello. He also finished 3rd in Assen.

Later in the season, Joan got his fourth podium in Austria, finishing 2nd. He also finished 3rd in Aragón and 2nd in Portimao. He ended the year with a 4th place in Valencia. Joan finished 3rd in the rider's championship with 208 points.

Injuries and Challenges: 2022

In 2022, Joan missed some races because of injuries he got in Austria.

New Team: Repsol Honda (from 2023)

A New Chapter: 2023

Suzuki left MotoGP after the 2022 season. So, Joan Mir signed with Repsol Honda for the 2023 season. He now rides alongside the famous six-time champion, Marc Márquez.
