Her Early Life and Work
Joan North was born in Hendon, a part of London, England. Her father, Frank Wevil North, worked with metals. Her mother was Gladys May Paybody.
Joan had a very interesting education. She studied in England, Wales, and even in China! Later, she attended King's College in London.
During World War II, Joan helped out by serving in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. After the war, she had many different jobs. She worked as a nurse, helping people who were sick. She was also a social worker, helping families and communities. Joan even worked for the BBC, which is a big broadcasting company, and for the Tate Gallery, an art museum in London.
In 1952, Joan married C. A. Rogers. He was a very smart math professor at the University of London. Together, they had two daughters named Jane and Petra.
