Joan Porqueras i Fàbregas (born in Barcelona in 1893 and died in London in 1966) was an important Catalan economist and politician. He played a key role in the government of Catalunya during a difficult time in history.

Biography
Early Life and Education
Joan Porqueras i Fàbregas was born in 1893 in the Sant Martí de Provençals area of Barcelona. His father was a bartender. Joan studied bookkeeping, which is like learning how to manage money and records for businesses.
Political Beginnings
In 1909, when he was just 16, Joan was involved in the events of Tragic Week. This was a time of big protests and unrest in Barcelona. He was hurt during these events and had to leave Spain, going to Argentina.
After a few years, he came back to Barcelona. He worked in different jobs. In 1931, he ran in the local elections for a political group called Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC). At the same time, he was also a member of the CNT's Liberal Professions Union.
Teaching and Economic Ideas
Joan was part of a group called the Ateneu Enciclopèdic Popular. He helped start the Institut de Ciències Econòmiques de Catalunya. Here, he taught three courses about economics. This shows he was very interested in how money and resources work in a country.
Role in Government
In August 1936, Joan was chosen to be part of the Economic Council of Catalunya. He represented the CNT. From this position, he helped create an important rule called the Collectivisation Decree. This decree changed how businesses and farms were owned and managed. He also worked on a plan to get people ready for civil mobilization.
From September 26 to December 17, 1936, Joan Porqueras i Fàbregas served as the Minister of Economy for the Generalitat de Catalunya, which is the government of Catalunya.
Exile and Later Life
In 1937, Joan had to leave Spain and went to France. When World War II started, he moved to London, Britain. In London, he worked with the BBC, which is a famous broadcasting company. He lived in London until he passed away in 1966.
