Joan Elizabeth Turville-Petre (born May 10, 1911 – died March 9, 2006) was a smart English scholar. She worked at the University of Oxford. She was an expert in Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse studies. These are old languages and cultures from England and Scandinavia.
Her Life and Work
Joan Turville-Petre was born Joan Blomfield. Her parents were Sam Blomfield and Kate Barton from Colchester, England.
In 1930, she started studying at Somerville College, which is part of Oxford University. She stayed connected to this college her whole life. She worked there as a teacher and researcher. From 1941 to 1946, she was a Tutor and Fellow. Then, from 1946 to 1965, she was a lecturer in English. After that, she became an Honorary College Research Fellow until she passed away in 2006.
On January 7, 1943, Joan Turville-Petre married Gabriel Turville-Petre. He was also a scholar at Oxford and worked in the same field. Their wedding was small, with no guests. However, their famous friends J. R. R. and Edith Tolkien were there as witnesses. J. R. R. Tolkien is well-known for writing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Joan and Gabriel had three sons. Their names were Thorlac Francis Samuel (born in 1944), Merlin Oswald (born in 1946), and Brendan Arthur Auberon (born in 1948, died in 1981).
Joan Turville-Petre lived to be 94 years old. She died on March 9, 2006. Her funeral was held in Aylsham, England, on March 23, 2006.
