Joanna McGrenere is a smart Canadian computer scientist. She studies how people use computers and how to make computers easier for everyone to use. This field is called human–computer interaction. She also works on making computer programs change to fit what a person needs (adaptive user interfaces). She wants computers to be useful for everyone (universal usability).
She is a professor of computer science at the University of British Columbia. This means she teaches students and does research there.
Her School Journey
Joanna McGrenere studied computer science for many years. She got her first degree, a Bachelor of Science, in 1993. This was from the University of Western Ontario. Later, she earned a master's degree in 1996. She got this from the University of British Columbia. She then earned her highest degree, a Ph.D., in 2002. This was from the University of Toronto. For her Ph.D., she wrote a big paper called The Design and Evaluation of Multiple Interfaces: A Solution for Complex Software. It was about making computer programs easier to use.
Her Career
After finishing her first degree, Joanna McGrenere worked for a short time at a big company called IBM. In 2002, after getting her Ph.D., she joined the University of British Columbia. She started as an assistant professor. In 2013, she became a full professor. This is a very important teaching and research role. She has helped many students get their own advanced degrees. Some of her notable students include Leah Findlater and Karyn Moffat.
Awards and Honors
Joanna McGrenere has received several important awards for her work:
- In 2004, she won the Borg Early Career Award. This award is for promising young researchers in computer science. It came from the Computing Research Association.
- In 2011, she received the Outstanding Young Computer Science Researcher Award. This was given by the Canadian Association of Computer Science.
- In 2017, she was chosen to be part of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. This is a group of Canada's top thinkers and researchers.
