He started playing in the top Spanish league, La Liga, in the 1977–78 season. He quickly became a key player for his team. Joaquín played in 462 top-division games until June 1992. In total, he played 644 matches for Sporting de Gijón and scored 65 goals.
In the 1986–87 season, his team finished fourth in the league. Joaquín scored eight goals in 40 matches that season, making him one of the top scorers on his team. He continued to play a big role until he retired at 36 years old. For a short time, he held the record for the most games played in the Spanish top league.
Playing for Spain
Joaquín also played for the Spanish national team 18 times and scored one goal. He was chosen to be part of the team for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. His first game for Spain was on November 14, 1979. It was a friendly match against Denmark in Cádiz, which Spain lost 1–3.
Beach Soccer Career
After his career in regular football, Joaquín started playing beach soccer in 1996. He played for the Spanish national beach soccer team. In January 2002, he became the head coach for the team. He coached them for 17 years, stepping down in November 2019.
