Playing for Clubs: A Long Career
Joaquín was born in Oviedo, a city in Asturias, Spain. He spent his entire 16-year professional football career playing for just one club: Sporting de Gijón. This is quite special because he was born in the city of their rival team, Real Oviedo.
Starting in La Liga
Joaquín started playing in La Liga, Spain's top football league, in the 1977–78 season. In his first year, he played 17 games and scored one goal. After that, he quickly became a key player for his team.
A Club Legend
Joaquín played a huge number of games for Sporting Gijón. He took part in 462 top-division matches until June 1992. Overall, he played 644 games for the club and scored 65 goals.
In the 1986–87 season, his team finished fourth in the league. Joaquín scored eight goals in 40 matches that year, making him one of the top scorers on his team. He kept playing an important role until he retired at 36 years old. He even held the record for the most games played in the Spanish top league for a short time!
Playing for Spain: International Matches
Joaquín also played for the Spanish national team. He played 18 international games and scored one goal for his country.
World Cup Experience
He was chosen to be part of the Spanish squad for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. This is a very big achievement for any footballer. His first game for Spain was on November 14, 1979. It was a friendly match against Denmark in Cádiz, which Spain lost 3–1.
From Player to Coach in Beach Soccer
After his career in regular football, Joaquín started playing beach soccer for the Spanish national team in 1996. Beach soccer is a version of football played on sand.
In January 2002, he became the head coach of the Spanish national beach soccer team. He stayed in this role for 17 years, stepping down in November 2019. He also helped coach the women's national team in beach soccer.
