Joe Giard's Baseball Journey
Joe Giard was born in Ware, Massachusetts. He started his baseball career playing for the St. Louis Browns.
Playing for the St. Louis Browns
Giard played for the St. Louis Browns for two seasons, in 1925 and 1926. During his time with the Browns, he mostly played as a starting pitcher. This means he would begin the game on the mound, throwing the first pitches.
Joining the New York Yankees
In February 1927, Joe Giard was traded to another team. He and outfielder Cedric Durst went to the New York Yankees. In return, the Browns received a pitcher named Sad Sam Jones.
Giard then became a member of the famous 1927 New York Yankees team. Many people think this team was one of the greatest baseball teams ever!
For the Yankees that year, Giard pitched in 16 games. He played a total of 27 innings. He mostly worked as a "relief pitcher," which means he would come into the game after another pitcher had already started. His ERA (a stat that shows how many runs a pitcher allows) was 8.00.
Later Life
After his baseball career, Joe Giard lived in Massachusetts. He passed away in Worcester, Massachusetts, on July 10, 1956.
