Joseph Howley was an important Irish leader from Oranmore, County Galway. He was a member of a group called the Irish Volunteers, who wanted Ireland to be an independent country.

In 1916, Joseph Howley gathered and led about 100 volunteers from Oranmore and nearby Maree. This happened on Easter Tuesday morning during the Easter Rising. Their plan was to attack the police barracks in Oranmore. However, they didn't manage to take the barracks. After this, Howley's group joined forces with another leader, Liam Mellows. Joseph Howley also worked as a tax collector.

Joseph Howley was killed by the RIC (the police force in Ireland at the time) on December 4, 1920. This happened at the Broadstone Railway Station in Dublin. A special police group called the Cairo Gang was responsible for his death.
